Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a term used to describe a gradual loss of renal function over time. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a prevalent condition in the USA, often resulting in serious complications like kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, and other problems. But hope is on the horizon, with recent findings in medical research and treatment options to better manage CKD.
What Is Chronic Kidney Disease?
CKD includes a range of disorders. These disorders show a decline in kidney function. They often result from conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or glomerular diseases. (ESRD) is, in effect, diagnosed in something like Stage 5 of the disease. Timely detection and treatment are vital to limit disease progression and optimize clinical performance.
Developments in CKD Medications and Treatments
GLP-1 Receptor Agonists
Recent approval of medications, like Ozempic (semaglutide), for treating CKD in patients with type 2 diabetes In clinical trials, Ozempic was shown to reduce the risk of kidney failure and disease progression by 24%. This approval represents an important step forward in the management of CKD, making Ozempic the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist to gain approval in this space.
SGLT Inhibitors
Sotagliflozin is a dual SGLT1 and SGLT2 inhibitor. It helps reduce heart attacks, strokes, and mortality in patients with CKD and type 2 diabetes. Sotagliflozin reduced heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular deaths by 23% compared to placebo, according to recently presented data. Double-targeting blocks many mechanisms involved in kidney and heart function. This makes it a smart combination strategy.
Advanced Dialysis Techniques
Many new and improved renal therapies, such as high-volume hemodiafiltration (HDF), have registered and applied for approval in the US. HDF mirrors normal kidney function more closely, and it has been shown to improve survival in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). HDF has been shown to improve 23% of overall survival compared to conventional hemodialysisBased on the above, we tried HDF in CKD patients undergoing dialysis.
Weight-Loss Medications
Patients with CKD also benefit from new weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic. These evidence-based medications can be life-saving on dialysis and can help their practitioners in achieving goal weight and also improving cardiovascular health! The relevant effects of these drugs to improve weight and heart health may represent a promising adjunct treatment for patients with CKD.
Southern Oklahoma Kidney Center and the Management of CKD
We here at Southern Oklahoma Kidney Center are dedicated to comprehensive CKD treatment. With a level of expertise in the field of nephrology, our nephrologists design patient-specific treatment approaches that leverage the most recent findings in the field of medical research. We emphasize early detection, management of the disease, and patient education so that patients can effectively take charge of the health of their kidneys.
Behavioral Changes and Support
Lifestyle changes are a key part of managing CKD, alongside medical interventions. A low-protein, low-salt diet, regular physical activity, and a healthy weight can substantially decelerate the progression of the disease. Our center gives patients dietary counseling, exercise programs, and support groups to help make these important lifestyle changes.
New advances in CKD treatments, like new drugs and better dialysis methods, bring hope to patients in the UK and around the world. We offer all services through telemedicine. This expanded availability helps patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) access better resources. Our goal is to improve the quality of life on a daily basis with the ability to stay up to date and provide our level of support to truly formulate and achieve greater health outcomes for our patients.
